A gripping narrative by Kate Moore that will not let you keep it down until you are done reading. This book is an account of the gut wrenching stories of the young women, their heroic fight for justice and the brutality of capitalism. The author succeeds in taking us to the radium dial paint studios where we see the deterministic young girls meticulously following the instructions lip-dip-paint earning the company a fortune and a deadly mysterious poison for themselves. Their ignorance, the industry's negligence and the indiscriminating powers of the magic element settles down in the bones of these girls disintegrating their lives. The author's powerful narration of the horrendous pain the girls endure brings tears in our eyes. The callousness of the company in recognizing the tragic deaths and denying them of the justice angers us. One cannot stop thinking of the starking reality that the official investigation starts only after the death of the first male person while hundreds of female lives doesn't matter. Their heroic fight and the unwavering will power to stand for their rights against the indifferent industry, dismissive lawyers, courts and doctors even as they lie on their death beds is an example to one and all. All this pain and sacrifice...and yet no memorial until an eighth grade girl champions for the cause and succeeds in honoring the radium girls. Their legacy glows forever illuminating our lives.
